One of the things I have heard many people say about prayer is that they don’t know how to pray. They make it sound like prayer is a skill that they have to learn. They look for someone to teach them the skills of prayer. Sometimes it is because they are too concerned about the choice of words. God, however, is concerned about the content and not the format of your prayer. The truth is if you can talk, you can pray. In fact, you don’t even necessarily have to talk to pray. Don’t forget, babbling a cliché is not prayer.

Prayer, according to Hannah of the Bible, is pouring out your soul to the Lord. About Hannah, 1st Samuel Ch. 1 says “her lips were moving but no words were coming out of her mouth”. And yet Hannah is a perfect model of prayer. Although the words didn’t come out of her mouth, they came out of the bottom of her heart. That is what pouring out your soul is all about. There is nothing so gratifying as pouring your soul out to the Lord.

If you do not know how to pray, what you need is not a prayer skill. What you need is faith. Because prayer is not a vocation. It is an act of faith. The Bible says “The Lord answered their prayer because they trusted in him” 1 Chr. 5:20. Not because they used impressive words; not because they prayed long; not because they have many years of experience, but because they trusted in him.

If you trust Him with all your heart, go ahead and pray. That is all it takes. I will never forget what Birkty shared with us a while ago about prayer. She said something like………If you don’t know how to pray, pray until you can pray.
