Why Obey?
By Semere @ 11:00 AM :: 240 Views :: 2 Comments :: :: Obedience

Whenever my son does something that he thinks I will approve he looks at me and eagerly waits for an approval.  I always make sure I give him the approval.  But If I am in the middle of something else and I didn’t notice,  he says “daddy, daddy,  I did it”.  If I still don’t pay attention,  he gets mad.  What I find interesting is that he doesn’t seem to know that the reason why I approve or disapprove anything is simply because I care for him. It is not about me.  It is all about him.  It is all about what is good or bad for him.  But I don’t think he understands that.  He acts as if he is doing those things for me.

I don’t know if you can relate to my son.  I can.  We sometimes do the same in our relationship with our father in heaven.  We act like He is affected when we do/don’t do His will.  We tend to forget that we are the 100% beneficiary of our relationship with the Lord.

Make no mistake.  The bible does not forbid anything.  It just tells you what is good or bad for you.  “Everything is permissible—but not everything is beneficial” 1 Cor. 10:23.   Never ask: Is this allowed?  Everything is allowed.  The question should be:  What good is this for me?

“If you sin, how does that affect him?  If your sins are many, what does that do to him? If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand?  Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only the sons of men.”  Job 35:  6:8

I personal agree that it is not primarley for God's sake that we obey Him. What we do does not affect God.

I do not have objection on the subject raised, but, I have comment on qotation used "every thing is permissable" to support the argument. I think it inappropriate for this issue. What Paul said is the qotation is different from what we are saying. Obviously, sin is not pemissable. He does not mean that sin of any kind is permissable. He was talking about the issues that differnt people can have different stands as a christian, like diet. Eating meat and not eating meat. I think it is good to use proper verse to support our arguments, else we missled others.

Be blessed.

Matewos,

I kind of agree with you even though my attempt was not an interpretation of the verse but application of the broader principle.

The second verse has a stronger correlation with the point being made.
