Silent Night

On the day of Christmas Eve in 1914 during the first world war in Belgium, German troops started decorating their side for Christmas.  They placed candles on trees and kept singing Silent Night. The British troops on the other side joined the singing.  Soon they started shouting Christmas greetings to one another and arranged to meet for exchange of small gifts.  This led to an arrangement to do proper burial of their fallen soldiers from both sides.

Soon the ceasefire spread into other areas of the lines and continued through to New Year’s Day.  This ceasefire occurred in spite of opposition at higher levels of the military but I guess approved by the highest level of authority.

This Christmas story is a true story confirmed by a letter from one of those first world war solidiers recently discovered and was being auctioned.

The story is a true picture of what Christmas is all about. Christmas is all about the miraculous birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who came to give us the only lasting peace and declared “Peace I leave with you” John 14:27

Merry Christmas,
The Cyber Evangelist
