"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2:38
This verse speaks about the Holy Spirit being given to us as a gift. Holy Spirit is a gift and that is what Peter said in this verse to the crowd on the day of Pentecost.
However, not only is the Holy Spirit a gift but it also gives us the gifts commonly referred to as gifts of the Holy Spirit in Rom 12, 1 Cor 12, and Eph 4. Make sure you don’t confuse the gift of the Spirit with his gifts. First, the Holy Spirit himself is the gift. After that he becomes the giver of the gifts. You have to have the gift before you even bother about the gifts of this gift.
What do you have to do to receive the gift? well, "repent and be baptized.....in the name of Jesus Christ". This gift is one and only one. It is given to all Christians who believe in the name of Jesus Christ without any exception. And what do you have to do to receive the gifts of the Spirit? "eagerly desire spiritual gifts" 1 Cor 14:1. The gifts are many and are given mainly to the Church.
