He is not praying so that they will be so strong in their love for God so much so that He will be impressed by how much they love Him. Rather, he is praying that they grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is so that they will be impressed by how much He loves them.
As a Christian, I find it always tempting to try to impress God. I have to keep reminding myself, however, trying to impress God is a futile exercise. I should ignore the temptation to impress Him and channel all the energy to grasping the depth of His love and be impressed myself by that.
Admit it. No one can have the ability to impress God. The moment you admit that, you will be free from the burden of the law and will be ready for the love of Christ to work in your life by His grace.
