“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another” Romans 13:8 NIV
Here Paul is talking about two kinds of debts. The first one is the money you owe. That should never be outstanding. Believe it or not God is pleased when you pay your bills on time. Don’t ignore your cell phone bill just because you have already switched to another company. I challenge you to check your credit record and make sure you pay every penny you owe. That is one of the millions of little things you can do to please the Lord. It is good for your credit history, anyways.
The other kind of debt Paul is talking about is the one we owe the Lord: The debt of Love. That is the only debt that should remain outstanding. You know why? It is because no matter how much you pay back, you will never be able to pay it off. It is too much to pay off. And the way to pay it back is to love others. We owe God so much. But, he doesn’t want us to pay him back. He wants us to give it to others.
How is your spiritual credit history? In the financial world the worst thing you can do to your credit history is to go bankrupt. The same is true with your spiritual life. If you are not paying your debt of love, you are bankrupt. The Bible says “I'm bankrupt without love.” 1 Cor. 13:3 MSG
